Arnold Hennes
Arnold specialises in the detailed history of Westminster Abbey.
His knowledge of this 'Royal Peculiar' is such that lecturing on Conservation work is high on his list of priorities - to ensure that historical treasures can be displayed for visitors to enjoy and that the fabric of the building itself remains safe for posterity. However, as the Abbey is not merely a museum - it is primarily a place of Christian worship, a living house of God, Arnold will inform the visitor what time Worship takes place on each day, just as he has done for over 20 years. He will tell you that we must balance the needs of worship, conservation and tourism and keep you interested in the long history of the abbey for as long as you like.
Arnold choice for this month special events:
The ""Royal Peculiar""
In the 1040s King Edward (later St Edward the Confessor), last of the Anglo-Saxon kings, established his royal palace by the banks of the river Thames on land known as Thorney Island. Close by was a small Benedictine monastery founded under the patronage of King Edgar and St Dunstan around 960 AD. This monastery Edward chose to re-endow and greatly enlarge, building a large stone church in honour of St Peter the Apostle. Your tour will include the history of coronations and burials at Westminster Abbey and details of Music Events, Concerts and Organ Recitals
